Dogs respond best to reward-based methods and these techniques are crucial for their welfare. Combining the latest science with respect for their doggie nature, I aim to help you understand them and teach them all they need to know so you can live happily together. I use compassionate methods and never use techniques that cause distress or discomfort.
Although there is no one-size-fits-all approach, the basis for my training and behaviour plans is the 3 W’s:
The Will: finding out what you (and your dog) want and how to satisfy those wants in simple ways that suit both your lifestyles
The Warm-up: practising techniques in easy environments
The Wait: only progressing to the next stage when your dog is ready
Together, we’ll work to make a positive change.
I’m Lauren, a dog trainer and behaviourist. And my dog’s name is Winston. Together, we’ve been on a whirlwind of a journey. I started my working life as a journalist. I wrote a book exploring the ways in which young women were changing the world. And then I realised the change I wanted to make had been under my nose the entire time: I wanted to enhance the lives of dogs and their human families.
Winston is the reason. A bundle of wrinkles and joy, he has had a few struggles. An uneasiness with other dogs. A need to bark at any van that drives past the house and to chase lorries on walks. Fearfulness around the unfamiliar, topped off with a dose of frustration. Without realising, I had turned into a bundle of nerves around him. Nervous about going for a walk, nervous about who would knock on the door, nervous about what others would think. What I was missing was positivity. I was focusing so much on the negatives that my bond with Winston was suffering. So I made a vow: that I would work with Winston to strengthen our relationship, meet his needs, and change the way he felt about dogs, delivery drivers and everything in between.
I studied canine behaviour to understand how his mind worked. And, over time, I learned how to teach the both of us to relax. There are still ups and downs. But he is now a dog who’s living a much happier and healthier life. I wanted to do the same for others so I started Winnie’s World®: a training and behaviour service that’s all about embracing your unique dog.
I’ve also spent time with rescue organisations, helping dogs in kennels and offering support to adopters. Right now, as well as running my own business, I work as an assessor for PAWS Therapy Dog Training and as a trainer for leading app Woofz.
